Sony Creative Software Sound Forge Pro 10 is a professional digital audio editor ideal for audio and video production and multimedia projects. And as one of my favorite audio editing tools Sound Forge Pro 10 is also a powerhouse when it comes to extensive audio processing, mastering effects, and plug-ins.

Out of the box Sound Forge Pro 10 is a smooth install (compatible with Windows XP and Vista platforms) and includes Sound Forge Pro 10, CD Architect 5.2, Noise Reduction 2.0, and iZotope Mastering Effects Bundle 2. Documentation includes a Quick start guide, Keyboard shortcut commands, and a User manual. Sound Forge documentation is also accessible via the Sony Sound Forge download website.

Audio Editing

New to Sound Forge Pro 10 are features such as event-based editing which allows for more precise editing of audio clips, edges, and fades. In addition to Sony’s time stretch tool, a new addition is the Zplane elastique Pro timestretch and pitch shift plug-in with real-time preview and support for time stretching both instrumentals and vocals. In the illustration below I used “Process->Time->elastique Timestretch” to adjust the audio length without altering the pitch. The quality of the stretched audio is very good and time and pitch can be manipulated independently.

Workspace and Window Layouts

Another handy feature is setting up workspaces and window layouts. For example, you can save multiple workspace settings which can be instantly recalled such as an editing session with related audio tracks. You can also specify window layouts that are designed for specific tasks such as audio editing, CD Red Book authoring, audio for video editing, and editing sessions using multiple display monitors. These features are great productivity aids.

Creating Acid Loops

Sound Forge Pro 10 also provides more precision and control when working with ACID loops. For example, I edited an audio clip and selected “Options->Selection Grid Lines” to view grid line markers that appear on the audio clip corresponding with time signature beat boundaries. I then set the grid divisions to 4 to create a 4-beat (4/4 time signature) loop. In my case I was working with drum loops so I selected “Don’t transpose”. If you’re working with bass or other tone-based loops you can select a root note for transposing the loop to a specific key.

Effects Processing

One of my favorite features in Sound Forge 9 continues to shine in version 10 as there are over 40 real time effects, many of which can be previewed with different presets in real time.

When sampling effects select the Bypass checkbox to compare the unprocessed “dry” signal with the processed “wet” signal, and when you’re satisfied with a preview effect setting you can apply it to re-generate the waveform.

Some effect types include amplitude modulation, chorus, delay/echo, distortion, dynamics, envelope, flange/wah-wah, noise gate, pitch, reverb, vibrato and wave hammer. Effects are also grouped by developer and some notables include Sony, Sonic, Roxio, and Nero.

Cleansing Audio

Sound Forge Pro 10 can convert and clean analog recordings (i.e. tape, vinyl) to digital audio. Noise reduction 2.0 includes noise reduction, click & crackle removal, clipped peak restoration, and audio restoration tools. All of these effects have plenty of presets. For example, there’s a preset for 78 RPM for cleaning vinyl records of clicks, crackles, and background hiss. With Clipped peak restoration you can detect clipping (distortion) at various levels, smaller clips at -3dB and larger clips at 0dB.

CD burning options include track-at-once (TAO) where you can add multiple tracks to a CD during multiple edit sessions, and then close the CD so that it’s playable in CD players. Disc-at-once (DAO) lets you add tracks and burn a CD in a single edit session (i.e. creating a master for CD replication).

Interactive Tutorials

Another great feature Sony has added in Sound Forge Pro 10 is Interactive Tutorials which focus on common features and functions such as event-based editing, fading and pitch bending audio, creating ACID loops, recording and restoring audio on vinyl, and TAO/DAO CD burning. Interactive Tutorials guide you along step by step, are very easy to understand, and can be accessed under the Help menu.

In the View menu you can preview audio media using the Sound Forge explorer and preview video media on the same display or on an external monitor.

Scripting

Scripts provide a powerful way to automate repetitive tasks. Scripts are invoked using “Tools->Scripting->Run Script” and selecting a script such as “Add Markers”. You can also create your own scripts in C#, Jscript, or VBScript using “View->Script Editor”. There you edit-compile-run. Scripts reside in the Script Menu folder under the Sound Forge installation folder. Sony has not yet posted their Script Developers Kit for version 10 but be sure to check the Developers Kit website if you would like to explore script development in more detail.

Format Support

Sound Forge Pro 10 can open and save a wide array of audio and video file formats and there are plenty of presets available.

Sound Forge Pro 10 is loaded with 13 tabs of preference settings such as default fade in/out curves and wet/dry signal mix.

Extras

Within Sound Forge Pro 10 you can select “File->Get Media from the Web” which launches Internet Explorer, directing you to the Sony Creative Software website where you can download royalty free music, loops, samples, and sound effects.

In addition to Interactive tutorials provided with Sound Forge Pro 10 Sony Creative Software has also produced a Sound Forge Pro 10 Seminar Series training DVD that includes task-oriented videos for applying processes and effects, event-based editing, and CD burning. These videos which also include audio clips showcase some tricks of the trade, are clear, concise, and are priced at US$89.

Always Room For Improvement

In a future version of Sound Forge Pro I’d like to see more integration with Sony Vegas Pro and Sony Cinescore.

New to version 10 is a performance optimization preference setting (Global media cache) which allocates memory for media recently accessed from disk. With incremental enhancements to version 9 Sound Forge Pro 10 is a high performance digital audio editing and mastering tool packed with powerful real time editing and mastering effects, ideal for audio/video producers.

Adobe Audition 3.0

In 2003, Audition was born from Adobe's acquisition of Syntrillium Cool Edit Pro. They basically gave it a name change and introduced it as a new product. While Adobe's coverage of video (and other multimedia) was extensive, their audio product line-up was basically non-existent. Audition was to change all that. In 2006, Audition 2 was released and was considered a major update with a new user interface, VST support, improved tools and effects, ASIO drivers support and more. Version 2 cemented the fact that Adobe was serious in competing in the audio software marketplace. Version 3 aims to take things one step further with more audio enhancements as well as the addition of MIDI data recording and editing support, thus making Audition a competitor in the DAW software market. Audition can now be used not only for audio recording, editing, mixing and mastering, but also for MIDI music composition.

Interface Improvements
In this new version, we get a few interface enhancements in the form of better file sorting, a VST plug-in manager, and customizable workspaces. Better file sorting refers to the fact that files can now be sorted by track number or by date, although sorting by name stills seems to be the most useful. The VST plug-in manager basically allows you to enable/disable VST and VSTi plug-ins. You can also specify VST directories to be scanned. There is a bit of confusion involved, however, because Audition has a VST (fx) plug-in manager (accessible only from the Edit view) and a VSTi plug-in manager (accessible only from the Sequencer view). It would be better to have one manager accessible from any view.

My favorite new addition to the interface is customizable workspaces. This feature allows you to setup Audition's interface to fit your own working style and then save the configuration. Panel/window positions along with colors and display settings are saved and can then be recalled via the Workspace menu or even a keyboard shortcut.

Editing Enhancements
The new editing features are sure to please just about every Audition user. At the top of the list is clip grouping. You can group multiple clips over multiple tracks and easily manipulate all the clips simultaneously. Select one clip in the group and all become selected. Trim one clip and all become trimmed. And it's a beautiful thing to be able to apply an identical fade to all clips at once.

Ripple Delete lets you delete a range of clips and have the empty space filled automatically by existing data beyond the range. Duplicate Selected Track lets you clone a track exactly including data and settings. And more significantly, Audition now uses the famous iZotope Radius time-stretching algorithms for high-quality adjustment of audio clip length and tempo. The algorithms come into play in all of Audition's time stretching features such as clip dragging, clip properties, time stretch effects and even the simple matter of changing the project tempo.

Two other very welcome enhancements are the new Top/Tail view and Play Lists. The Top/Tail view allows you to create perfect audio loops by displaying a special view of the beginning and end of a file, while also displaying the entire file for reference. You can adjust loop points during playback for precise loop creation. My favorite enhancement, however, is Play Lists. By inserting markers into a project, and then creating a play list using the marker regions, you can easily try out different arrangements of your song. For example, have section B play before section A and loop multiple times before playing the ending. This is a feature that all DAWs should include.

More MIDI Support
Now before I rip into the new MIDI features provided by Audition, please let me say that it's great to actually have these features available. They are definitely a big step forward from Audition 2, which only provided simple MIDI file import and playback to hardware or ReWire. With that being said, Audition 3 includes a lot more MIDI functionality, but it still falls far short of the features found in other DAWs.

The basic MIDI workflow goes like this… you insert a MIDI track. That MIDI track can be opened into its own Sequencer window. Inside the Sequencer window, you can have multiple VSTi tracks – up to 16. Each VSTi track can drive a single VSTi, however, they must all share the same audio output that is assigned to the MIDI track. So while this type of paradigm seems flexible at first, the restriction of a single audio output negates that flexibility. Inside the Sequencerwindow , you can record and edit the MIDI data for the MIDI track, but that data is not displayed in the clips area of the track in the Mainwindow . This means that if you have multiple MIDI tracks in a project (as well as audio tracks), you can't see how the data is lined up.

Recording and editing MIDI data has drawbacks as well. Actually, recording works fine – there's real-time recording as well as step recording. For editing, there are the usual Select, Create (pencil), and Erase tools with data display on a piano roll grid. You also get Snap to Grid and Snap to Scale functions. You can edit note, velocity and controller data (although you are limited to nine predefined controller types – yikes!). To make matters worse, if you want to edit groups of data in multiple tracks, you have to Select All data in each track one-by-one. Plus, you only have four different global editing functions: Humanize, Quantize, RandomizeVelocity, and Transpose. Quantize strength is always 100%, Humanize and Randomize Velocity don't provide any adjustable parameters, and Transpose gives you simple semitone and octave adjustments.

Supreme Spectral Editing
The crown jewels of Audition 3 are the spectral audio editing features. I nearly cried tears of joy when I saw what these tools can do. When editing a single audio file in Edit view, you can display that file as a waveform or one of three spectral displays: frequency, pan, and phase. The Spectral Frequency Display provides Time, Marquee, and Lasso selection tools, a Scrub tool, as well as the Effects Paint Brush and Spot Healing Brush. With the selection tools, you can select specific frequencies and frequency ranges of an audio file and then apply processing to those selections. Even more exciting are the Brush tools. Got an annoying sound in your audio that you want to erase? Use the Spot Healing Brush and simply erase that sound by drawing over it with the Brush. It's that easy. What if you want to process a specific sound instead? Use the Effects Paint Brush to draw a dynamic selection in the spectral image and layer Brush strokes to determine the intensity of the processing. Then use any of Audition's processing and effects features to edit the selected data. I kid you not!

The Spectral Pan and Phase Displays only provide the Time and Marquee selection tools, but they are still very useful. If you have an audio mix with instruments panned throughout the stereo image, you can use the Spectral Pan Display to select and process the individually panned instruments. For example, you can select a guitar part that was panned away from the center and apply effects to that part without disturbing the rest of the audio mix. The same goes for the Spectral Phase Display, but in this case you would select a part of the audio that was out of phase. In addition, there are Graphic Panner and Automatic Phase Correction effects available that are very useful in fixing panning and phase problems.

By the way, if you are really into tinkering with audio data, you can actually save the spectral image of an audio file as an image file. You can then load that image file into a paint program, make changes, and then load the image back into Audition to hear what it sounds like. Not only that, but you can load in any image file into Audition and have it automatically converted into audio data. Of course, the results can be wildly unpredictable, but just think of the sound effect possibilities? Have you ever wondered what a picture of yourself sounds like?

New Effects
To top off the many features added to Audition 3, are the inclusion of a number of brand new effects. These include a Convolution Reverb, Analog Delay, Guitar Suite, Mastering Rack, and Adaptive Noise Reduction. Convolution Reverb brings more reverberation power to Audition and comes with a collection of 17 impulses, and of course, you can load up any other impulses you may already have. Analog Delay provides some cool delay options with Tape, Tape/Tube, and Analog processing modes.

Guitar Suite includes a rack of effects in one plug-in with Compressor, Filter, Distortion, Box Modeler, and Mix modules. The effects you can achieve with the suite are quite good, although it doesn't provide as much flexibility as something like IK Multimedia AmpliTube. The Mastering Effect is also a rack of effects in one plug-in and provides Equalizer, Reverb, Exciter, Widener, Loudness Maximizer, and Output Gain modules. Again, you can achieve some nice results with this plug-in, but it doesn't provide as many features or adjustable parameters as something like iZotope Ozone. I really do like the Guitar Suite and Mastering Effect plug-ins though. I also like the new Adaptive Noise Reduction plug-in a lot because it allows the removal of noise without using a noise print. So if you have an audio file that doesn't provide any silent spots (where a noise print can be taken), then this plug-in might do the trick.

Awesome Audio But Only Okay MIDI
So, while Audition 3 now includes more MIDI features, it's still not up to par with other major DAWs such as Cakewalk Sonar or Steinberg Cubase. Audition needs to add many more advanced MIDI editing functions and enhanced track output support in order to compete as a full-fledged DAW. When it comes to audio, however, Audition is extremely powerful. Being able to double-click a clip in Multitrack view to have it instantly opened in a full-fledged audio editor is so very useful. And having spectral editing at your disposal is just incredible. Audition 3 is a great application for audio recording, editing, mixing and mastering.

WinRAR your System

For those of you who haven't heard of WinRAR, I don't know where you've been this whole time, but hopefully this review will set you straight. WinRAR is one of the most powerful archivers on the net. For an avid user of the net, this is a tool that is desperately sought, continuously used and usually never farther than a mouse-click away.

I originally used WinZip for most of my archiving. That was until I gave WinRAR a test drive. When I first laid eyes on WinRAR, I couldn't really say I was impressed with anything. It had three little tri colored books for its icon, where was that WinZip lightning bolt I was used to? What can this measly looking program do that WinZip can't? Prepare to learn.

The Basics

WinRAR supports the most important ZIP formats that are on the net. This includes RAR and ZIP files� Now I ask myself why doesn't WinZip perform this common courtesy? WinRAR also unpacks 7Z, ACE, ARJ, BZ2, CAB, GZ, ISO, JAR, LZH, TAR, UUE, Z file types. For users who are wondering 'why is WinRAR better?'

It might have something to do with the fact that its compression ratio is usually ten to fifty percent better than most common methods. It's also eight to fifteen percent better than ZIP formatting.

Yes, it's slightly slower, but in the long haul you'll come to realize that slightly longer formatting time is definitely worth it compared to the amount of extra space you save. It's a little give and take.

It's freeware for the first forty days, so it gives you lots of time to accommodate yourself with the program.

As for its lackluster looks� the looks which gave me the impression that this program was meant for simpletons� well, if they really bother you, you can change them by downloading various skins from WinRAR's site.
Simpletons can work this application because of its clarity and easy-to-use interface. If you have a RAR file type, all you need to do is double click, or right-click for the drop down menu, to open with WinRAR. Click on the 'Extract To' button, choose a location and BAM, it's done.

If you think that process is painstakingly long, you can also just double click on the file you wish to unzip, let WinRAR start, then drag-and-drop the files that are within that file anywhere on your system.

Other Benefits

I appreciate using WinRAR because of its encrypting and password protection capability. I don't have to worry about security issues. It has a command line interface for users who type faster than they click. WinRAR is definitely faster at unzipping than most available archiving applications.

It also offers recovery methods different than other archiving programs. These methods are only selectable within WinRAR. So if you ever get a damaged RAR file over the net, you don't have to find another one, or wait for someone to send it to you again. Instead fix it yourself and go on about your business.

The Good

There's so much goodness, I don't know where to begin. It has a great compression ratio, encryption capabilities and good overall file type support. It has a very simple interface that is not one bit confusing.

The Bad

Maybe a little too simple with its interface (and I'm just nitpicking).

The Truth

WinRAR is one of those programs that you must have on your computer. It is definitely reliable, practical and will do the job better than almost any other archiver out there. If you're an avid downloader, you already have this program, if not.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop, atau biasa disebut Photoshop, adalah perangkat lunak editor citra buatan Adobe Systems yang dikhususkan untuk pengeditan foto/gambar dan pembuatan efek. Visual Basic 5.0 (February 1997), Microsoft merilis secara eksklusif Visual basic untuk versi windows 32 bit . Programmer yg menulis programnya pada versi 16 bit dapat dengan mudah melakukan import porgramnya dari VB4 ke VB5. dan juga sebaliknya, program VB5 dapat diimport menjadi VB4. VB 5 memperkenalakan kemampuan untuk membuat User Control.
Visual Basic 6.0 (pertengahan 1998) memperbaiki beberapa cakupan, temasuk kemapuannya untuk membuat Aplikasi Web-based . Visual Basic 6 di jadwalkan akan memasuki Microsoft “fasa non Supported” dimulai pada maret 2008
Visual Basic .NET, dirilis pada tahun 2002, Beberapa yang mencoba pada versi pertama .NET ini mengemukakan bahwa bahasa ini sangat powerful tapi bahasa yg digunakan sangat berbeda dengan bahasa sebelumnya, dengan kekurangan diberbagai area, termasuk runtime-nya yang 10 kali lebih besar dari paket runtime VB6 serta peningkatan penggunan memory.
Visual Basic .NET 2003, dirilis dengan menggunakan NET framework versi 1.1.
Visual Basic 2005, merupakan itegrasi selanjutnya dari Visual Basic .NET. dan Microsoft memutuskan untuk menghilangkan kata kata .NET pada judulnya.
